The U23s Providoor Premier League has been fiercely competitive, with the final round determining the teams that would advance to the finals. UTS Randwick Sparks and Manly Warringah Sapphires finished just one win apart on the leader board, making the race even more thrilling.
On July 31, the Sapphires faced off against the Erina Hawks in a crucial Elimination Final. Both teams had impressive seasons, with their senior squads also securing spots in the Opens competition finals.
This Elimination Final promises to be a tight contest, as the Sapphires and Hawks have each claimed a victory over the other during the regular season. Neither franchise has won an U23s title before, adding an extra layer of excitement to the matchup.
A consistent trend has emerged for the Sapphires – they tend to bounce back after losing two consecutive games. This pattern bodes well for them heading into the semi-finals, especially after their recent two-game losing streak.
Last year, the Sapphires narrowly missed out on finals by just one point, and they’ll be eager to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself.
The Manly Warringah Sapphires put up a strong fight in the preliminary final, but Sutherland Stingrays proved too powerful, securing a dominant 14-goal victory. Despite the loss, the Sapphires can be proud of their impressive 3rd place finish in what was a highly competitive season.

What a thrilling match to cap off the Grand Finals! From start to finish, the game was a true showcase of determination and skill, with both teams locked in an intense battle that kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The outcome was in doubt right up until the final whistle.
The ERNA Hawks came out strong, taking an early 13-10 lead in the first quarter. But the Manly Warringah Sapphires quickly regained their focus, closing the gap and going into half-time with a narrow 24-23 lead. With just a one-goal advantage, the Sapphires knew they would need to push even harder in the second half to secure the win.
The third quarter saw both teams exchange goals, but a key turnover from the Sapphires allowed them to extend their lead to three goals. Heading into the final quarter, the Hawks trailed 33-36, knowing they had one last shot at redemption. The Hawks, who had led the competition all season, fought back valiantly, evening the score as the game reached its final moments.
With just seconds remaining, the Sapphires held a one-goal advantage and managed to maintain possession, securing a hard-fought victory. The final score read 47-46, and the Sapphires were crowned the 2023 Premier League Opens Champions.
A huge congratulations to the Manly Warringah Sapphires for their incredible victory, and equally impressive recognition goes to the ERNA Hawks, who maintained their top position throughout the season and finished as Runners-Up in a spectacular campaign.
